Happy Easter! He is Risen, alleluia! With today being celebrated as the Feast of the Annunciation, my children are thrilled that it has been dessert night for ten days in a row. Cakes and cookies and chocolate, oh my! See below for some post-Vigil enthusiasm.
Some updates
Since we last hung out, I saw sketches for my first picture book! It’s unreal to see someone else bring the words of this story to life in visual work. There is a special beauty to a picture book being an interaction of text and image, and I just can’t wait to see final art in color!
What I’m reading
I’ve been reading Absolution by Alice McDermott in the midst of all the other things I’m reading. I’ve already had to take it out of the library twice, since it’s a new release and has a shorter borrowing window. But when I got it back, it still had my bookmark (which features ducks and was in the book when it first came into my hands) in my spot!
What my kids are reading
I gave my oldest son a book on gardening vegetables in New Jersey for Easter, and he is all in. He’s making plans, taking notes, scouting prices at the local greenhouse. He started some herbs inside already. He’s going to try potatoes for the first time this year, too! He’s such a cool kid, interested in everything. Books really do amazing things in our lives!
Something I love
During Lent, I followed along with Emmaus Academy’s Exodus Challenge (I didn’t make time for the Sunday videos on Exile). Each day, we read one chapter of Exodus (conveniently forty chapters long) and listened to a five-to-ten-minute explanation by Dr. John Bergsma. Totally accessible, totally fascinating. I learned so much and delighted in all the connections he made from the Old Testament to the New.
What I’m creating (knitting, lettering, embroidery, etc.)
I am sooo close to finishing a sweater. Really. So close. See?
Almost made it to the bind-off for the neck, and then sleeves! Just looks like a big rectangle now, but it really is a sweater.
Where my work is
I love working with Olivia at Into the Deep on her Catholic homeschooling products. The student liturgical planner for the upcoming academic year I helped edit is now available for pre-order, so check it out here! Isn’t it beautiful?
What I’m working on
Last Friday at dinner, my husband gently asked if I was supposed to be writing a novel for my graduate program. Yes, yes, I am.
It’s time to get the words out of my brain and onto the page, so I’m telling you now that in the next edition, I’m giving you a word count. Let’s see if that works :)
A quote to sit and sip with
We’ve been listening to a lot of Ben Rector in the car, and this song makes me so grateful that I’ve been blessed with a number of friends who have been there for me since kindergarten, if not before.
‘Cause no one knows you like they know you
And no one probably ever will
You can grow up, make new ones
But truth is there’s nothing like old friends
—“Old Friends,” Ben Rector
Christ is risen! Happy Easter! Congrats on the sweater progress-that looks awesome :) I have so much admiration for people who can stick with big knitting projects (I mostly stick with hats, wash cloths, whatever is quick and easy haha). Since you are a knitter, I'm wondering-have you heard of nalbinding? I met a woman at a medieval fair last weekend who was nalbinding, and I've started learning how to do it. It predates knitting and crocheting and it's been pretty fun so far-and a nice change from what I'm used to with fiber arts.
